Birthstone of the Month: September

Birthstone of the month for September is the incomparable sapphire. Sapphire is from the mineral species of corundum, of which ruby is also a variety. Sapphires and rubies have the same basic chemical composition of Aluminium Oxide, and vary only in the colouring agents present to give them their distinctive colours.

Sapphire crystals in their pure state are actually colourless, and blue sapphires are coloured by impurities of iron and titanium. Sapphires which are not red or blue are termed 'fancy' sapphires, and these can include green, yellow, pink and the rare (in its natural form) pinkish-orange padaradscha ("lotus blossom") sapphire from Sri Lanka.
Sapphire is formed in high heat and medium pressure geological conditions, and these conditions create a gemstone second only to diamond in hardness, so sapphire is a both a practical and beautiful gemstone choice for all forms of jewellery including rings. Worn by the ancient Greeks and Romans as a stone of protection, the sapphire is a popular choice for engagement rings due to its hardwearing composition.
Pictured is a beautiful blue 1.32ct emerald cut sapphire from Ceylon, new to our stock here at Buck & Co and sourced by our Gemmologist. It is currently awaiting the attention of our Goldsmith; we have ideas for it, but all suggestions welcome!
Also shown is a Certified pink sapphire, 0.92ct and certificated as natural and untreated. Mounted in platinum by our in-house Goldsmith, and with delicate diamond set shoulders, this gemstone displays the delicate pink blush of a natural pink sapphire. Also pictured are a range of beautiful second-hand sapphire rings available for viewing at our shop in Bodmin; viewings are most welcome or PM for more details.
